Overview:

The COVID-19 global pandemic is having an enormous impact on almost every aspect of our lives. The rapid and easy spread of this virus has created a substantial amount of interest in the germicidal properties of ultraviolet radiation and the possibility of using this spectrum to disinfect various applications.

This presentation will cover the three types of ultraviolet radiation and levels of germicidal properties and capabilities. The history of the use of various lamp sources which can deliver UV will be explored as well as the risks associated with the various types

UVC will be specifically discussed as a germicidal, how it can be used in various applications such as water and air cleaning.

Learning Objectives:

  • Ultraviolet:There will be an in-depth discussion on what ultraviolet radiation is, its history, and the different types of ultraviolet radiation including UVA, UVB, andUVC.
  • Available lamp technology:We will explore some of the current lamp technologies available for ultraviolet radiation including low-and medium-pressure mercury lamps, as well as pulsed xenon arc lamps, andLED
  • Benefits and Risks of UVC:We will explore how ultraviolet radiation issued as a germicidal and the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of ultraviolet radiation including a discussion of near UV vs. far UV.
  • ApplicationsWe will review applications where UV is commonly used surfaces, air, and water and how to determine the proper dosing of ultraviolet radiation to achieve inactivation.
